Poem of the Week: Winter’s Attic

Good morning and welcome the first Poem of the Week in a while! For those who are unfamiliar with this, each week I highlight a poem that stood out to me for one reason or another, and shine the spotlight on the poem-and the writer. Today, is Rita S. Spalding.

Rita is an absolute gem of a person, she has been writing for years, her first book coming out before I was born. I am in awe of her talent and am grateful we’ve become friends over the last few months. Rita has numerous publications under her belt and will very shortly have her second collection Eighth released.

Thank you Rita, for being the Poem of the Week this week, a very special return to posting!

Winter’s Attic

By Rita S. Spalding

We are miracles you and I,

still standing after all these years.

Through dark storms and quiet shadows,

and old monsters in the attic.

Long nightmares that slithered their way,

then left and vanished with a twist.

We opened our eyes and saw us,

found ourselves amid rich brilliance.

Waiting for icy snow to melt,

we burst like prisms in sunlight.

Our fragile hands holding our hearts,

hot breaths not wasted on bold words.
